We don’t break the rules often. But special circumstances call for exceptions! With this engagement session, we broke ALL the rules. 1. Only shoot right before sunset. 2. Don’t shoot on holidays. 3. NEVER shoot when it rains. 4. Only shoot when the temperature is between 50 and 80 degrees. Yeah, we broke every single one of those. And you know what? I’d do it again. This special New Year’s Eve engagement session turned out to be one of our favorites!
Laura and Chad both live out of town. They don’t even live in the same town! So when they contacted us to let us know they would both be in Memphis – together – for New Year’s Eve, we quickly made arrangements for their engagement session. We usually prefer to shoot our sessions close to sunset. Because #magichour. The problem this time was that they had a wedding to attend, and Laura’s bridesmaid duties were dominating most of their day. Hey, we understand that completely and would never want to be the ones to interfere with a wedding timeline! So we decided that sunrise would be our next best bet.
The thing we did not count on was the weather. We kept our fingers crossed for the unseasonably warm weather that we had been having, but when New Year’s arrived, it came with cold winds and rain. Laura and Chad don’t know this, but I came really close to canceling the whole thing. Rain usually does NOT make for a great session! But Ed kept his eye on the radar and we waited it out. By the time we met up with Laura and Chad and the sun was beginning to light up the sleepy city, the rain had passed. For the time being.
We got right to work, and Laura was a champ, even taking off her coat for some of the shots, despite the cold! We had previously planned to roam around the arts district (Laura is studying to be an interior designer, and she has quite an artistic eye!), then finish up on the river. By the time we finished walking around downtown, the rain had moved back in. We waited it out again as the couple changed clothes, then made a run for the river when the rain slowed down. Laura and Chad had brought a blanket to cozy up in and a thermos of coffee (they are big coffee fans!), and it could not have been more perfect for a cloudy, rainy, day! We finished up right in time as the rain really started coming down.
Laura and Chad, thank you so much for sticking it out with us! We had so much fun with you guys, despite the weather. These photos are some of my favorites, and I really think the clouds only ADDED to them! Enjoy a few of our favorites. We can’t WAIT for the wedding!
