What To Wear For Your Engagement Session

What to Wear For Your Engagement Session

Spring is kicking into high gear here in the South, so we are doing lots of engagement sessions lately! We absolutely LOVE doing engagement sessions. It’s our time to really get to know our couples, and we love hearing all their love stories! It’s such an honor for us to be able to capture this time in their lives. Engagements fly by so fast and this special time gets overlooked by the whirlwind of wedding planning. It’s so great to take a day and really celebrate this time!

We get asked all the time by our couples about what to wear for their engagement shoot. Everyone wants to look their best in photos, so we’re always happy to share our tips! While I always say there are no “rules” for engagement shoots (other than to have fun!), we have found a few guidelines that work well for everyone! We’ve gathered our top 10 tips below to help you prepare:

What To Wear For Your Engagement Session

1. Don’t Try to Match

Matchy-matchy was cool once (think khakis and white shirts on the beach!), but not anymore! Try to pick outfits and accessories that coordinate instead. I prefer to stay away from black, when possible, but a touch of black in accessories (a belt, shoes, scarf, etc) is fine. Black can be dark in photos, and I find that colors really show your personalities better! Be unique, and be YOU!

2. Don’t be afraid to be BOLD!

Bright colors really pop in photos! Yes, neutrals are always “safe,” and still photograph great, but a pop of a bright color can be so much fun! If you have a favorite color, don’t be afraid to wear it! It doesn’t have to be a big item – it can be as simple as a bright necklace or shoes. Accessories and jewelry make your outfits your own! Scarves, bold necklaces, and fun shoes are always welcome!

3. Most Patterns are Okay!

We’ve noticed that some of our couples shy away from patterns because think they are distracting. While this is true for a few graphic patterns, there’s no reason to avoid a good pattern! As long as it’s not distracting or overwhelming, don’t be afraid to wear patterns! I always encourage my brides that when in doubt, text me a photo of what you’re planning to wear. I’m always happy to give my opinion!

4. Dress for the Season

Take advantage of whichever season you choose to have your photos taken! If it’s spring, pastels and florals are perfect. Fall calls for more muted colors, plaids, and rusty tones. Summer is great for shorts and light fabrics. And don’t rule out winter! We love winter shoots too, especially with cute boots, jackets, and lots of layers!

5. Bring an Outfit Change

We always suggest at least two outfits – something dressy, and something more casual. This adds diversity to your photos, and gives you another chance to really show off your personalities! For the guys, dressy doesn’t necessarily mean suit and tie. It can be as simple as adding a blazer to jeans, or a tie to a button-down shirt. Girls usually enjoy wearing a dress for this portion, but pants can be dressy too! Just stick with your own style, and you’ll look your best!

6. Themes Can be Fun

We always work closely with our couples to tailor a session that’s all about them! If they enjoy cocktails and cigars, let’s incorporate that! If they want a Beyonce and Jay-Z inspired shoot, we’re on board! We’ve done a session at airports because the couple had a long-distance relationship and the airport was such an integral part of their lives. We’ve had a couple that loved Starbucks so much and had their first date there, so we did some shots at Starbucks. We want to include whatever makes you unique!

7. Have Your Makeup Done

Ladies, I highly recommend getting a professional makeup artist to do your makeup for the day. They are pros at hiding blemishes and bringing out your best features. It’s also a great way to do a trial run for the wedding day! Most importantly, when girls feel beautiful, they are more comfortable in front of the camera!

8. Clean the Ring (and do Your Nails!)

The ring is always the piece of the engagement that makes it “official!” We always like to get some shots of the ring by itself, as well as on your finger, so make sure it looks its best too!

9. Empty Your Pockets

This one is for the guys! They always carry around their wallets, keys, and their cell phones in the pants pockets. Even when you don’t think they will show up in photos, they do! You don’t want any extra bulges, so stick these items in your lady’s purse instead. In a pinch, I’ll carry them for you (and try not to forget to return them)!

10. Relax!

Last but not least, we want to make sure you relax and have fun! This is a special time that you will never again have with your significant other. Remember what these photos are about, and enjoy this time together! No matter what you wear, be yourselves! If you’re relaxed and having fun, your photos will be amazing!
