We had such a great time during this colorful engagement session! Fall is never a disappointing time to shoot, and the red, orange, and yellow leaves added even more color to these images. When we accidentally found a purple door that perfectly matched Liz's lavender shirt, it was the icing on the cake! We got to know these two quite well as we explored midtown together, looking for all the perfect spots that would bring out their personalities.
Hello 2017! I've been super bad about updating the blog with our recent shoots, but I have a good excuse! We shot SO many sessions in November! We don't have a long fall season here in the South, so we have to jump on what we do get. Here in Memphis, November really gives us the best for Fall as far as temperature and color goes, so we stayed busy the whole month. And that means we have so much to share!
I read something once that has managed to stick with me for a long time. Wedding rings are beautiful things - they are shiny and sparkle when new. Diamonds catch the light and play it across nearby surfaces. They are, I think it's safe to say, the most coveted piece of jewelry there is. But an old, worn wedding ring is even more beautiful. Each scratch represents the time you've spent with your soulmate. Each ding tells a story. The more flaws the ring has, the more beautiful it is. Because it stands for something bigger than us. Kanesha and Bates know from experience just how true that is. They may be having a wedding coming up soon, but they already wear their rings, because they're already married.
Instead of flowers, he brought her a gold star. Everyone does flowers. Cody wanted to impress Tiffany, and give her something that would last and that she would remember. And, okay, maybe he was trying to get a laugh out of her too. Cody is a funny guy, laid-back and lighthearted, and girls love a guy who can make them laugh. It worked, as Tiffany has been charmed by him since the beginning!
Today is a very special day on the blog! We always consider ourselves lucky to get to do what we do, but when we get to photograph friends, it's an extra blessing! Most of Memphis may know Natalie as a top finalist on So You Think You Can Danceor as a cast member of Wicked, but to us, she is "Miss Natalie," the one person who probably spends almost as much time with our kids as we do! Natalie is the competition director at our dance studio, and she is the one in charge of making our kids (and tons of others!) into the great dancers that they are turning out to be! We couldn't be more grateful for her, so when we heard she was getting married, we were first in line to "audition" for the role of photographer! All cheesy puns aside, we are thrilled to be able to document this time in her life, and we can't wait for the wedding!
Anthony and I had been planning this for months. We even had super secret code words and hand gestures. Just like real spies. But when the day arrived, and then THE MOMENT, I think we were just as nervous as he was! Maybe more. See, Anthony knew he would be marrying Shavonn. He couldn't imagine a life without her. So he planned to ask her to be his wife. On camera! Our cameras.
There are so many things to love about an engagement session! But one of our very favorite things about them is that we get some one on one time with our couples, and really get to know them better on a personal level. Not only does this make us better equipped to photograph them on their wedding day, but it starts building a relationship so that we can truly call them friends later! It had been awhile since we first met with Taylor and George, so we were eager to hang out with them and learn more about how they love. We were in for such a treat!
We want every engagement session (and wedding!) we do to be as unique as possible. To do that, we always tailor our sessions around our couples, including things like their favorite colors, their favorite places to go, and their favorite activities to do together. Basically, the things that make up their LIFE together. In this case, Robyn and Nick currently live in Nashville, so their life is there. Nashville is an easy drive for us, so it was a no-brainer that we would go to them for this session. We have been looking forward to this engagement session ever since we first met with Robyn and Nick, and it was everything we dreamed, and more!
We started a new tradition last year. Every February, Ed and I take an annual trip with our best friends. To get away and focus on friendship before things really start to get busy. Just a few days. Enough time to add another checkbox to our travel journals, to shirk responsibility in order to stay young, and to go and see and do. Last year, we toured the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg and hit the Nashville nightlife. But last year, it was a cold trip, staying true to February. And last year, our best friends weren't engaged. We decided to change things up this year!
These two lovebirds actually got married this past Saturday! It was a beautiful, perfect day, and we can't wait to share those images. But in the meantime, we're going to share the images from their midtown Memphis fall engagement session! We managed to fit in a little time for Kate and Sean's engagement photos only a couple weeks before the wedding, on a beautiful autumn day. I absolutely love the trees in the fall! Keep reading to see the beautiful yellows and reds we captured, along with this cute couple!
