Historic Downtown Memphis Elopement

I’m going to be straight-up honest in today’s post. This beautiful little civil service is one of our very favorite weddings ever, but it didn’t start out that way. It was the hottest day of the year so far, over 100 degrees! The bride’s hair was nearly ruined the day before. The groom really wanted a ceremony in the courthouse, but no judges were available. Instead, we would be at a law office, with no idea what the location or light would be like. My heart sank. I was beginning to wonder if we should reschedule. Things just weren’t going our way. Then we arrived at the location.

The retired judge who was performing Brittany and Matt’s ceremony had an upstairs office in a beautiful old historic house-turned-office building. I think I squealed out loud when I saw it! It was a beautiful Victorian, built in 1869, complete with a historic marker standing proudly on its front lawn. The sun was in the perfect position for that side of the street, and there was an almost-hidden, shaded pathway around the side that was just BEGGING for a First Look! My spirits were just beginning to turn around.

Then our couple arrived. Matt stepped out of his car looking especially dapper with his coral bow tie. We tucked him away inside (with the air conditioning!) while we waited for Brittany. A few minutes later, I was looking at one of the most stunning brides I had ever seen! She looked absolutely gorgeous in her layered ruffles and handmade necklace, carrying a modest bouquet of soft roses. Her smile lit up her face, and I was struck with the realization that we were here for THEM. That the weather and location didn’t matter. That it was their wedding day, and they weren’t going to let anything ruin it. And just like that, I was chagrined, excited, and filled with a heartwarming love for these two, all in one.

Did they have an elaborate, Pinterest-planned wedding? No. Was it perfect for them? Yes! Was it 101 degrees outside? Yes. Did my couple care? No! Was I a hot (literally!) mess when we were done? Yes! But I didn’t care either. We had SO much fun with these two, and I was in an UNCONTROLLABLY good mood for the rest of the day! My day, and my heart, were completed turned around.

Because of them.

The day didn’t turn out like we expected, or even wanted. It was better. I learned to trust. And I remembered that weddings – of any kind or size – is about MARRIAGE. Not location. Not weather. Not the guest list. It’s about two people saying “I do,” and “I love you,” and “I promise.” Out loud.

Thank you, Brittany and Matt, for reminding me why I love this job. I promise never to forget ever again!

Brittany and Matt arrived in separate cars so that they could have their First Look photographed. I loved that (and many other things) about them!

Brittany and Matt brought their three children, and I loved this little moment between Brittany and her daughter!

The office where they were married was way better than a courtroom in the courthouse! It was gorgeous, stylish, and full of beautiful light!

We took a few minutes afterward for some portraits before venturing out into the heat.

Seriously, this building. It may be a law office, but it was PERFECT for wedding photos! After we roamed the small property, we chose a few spots in nearby downtown to finish out the day’s photos.

It was right about here when Matt looked at his beautiful bride and expressed his thankfulness that they commissioned  a photographer. I’m so glad it was us!

Brittany made her necklace herself! My favorite detail was the little strand of pearls trailing down her back.

These two were SUCH good sports for standing out in the heat for over an hour! I think the photos were worth it 🙂

Brittany and Matt, thankyouthankyouthankyou!! Thank you for being awesome. Thank you for your beautiful hearts. Thank you for being you! We did it! You both were amazing and I love who you are, especially together. I know the Florida beach was a welcome respite! We can’t wait to hear all about the honeymoon!

I would love to know where this wedding was held, we are planning on eloping ourselves in 2021. Also, I’d love to enquire about your packages and fees, we’re not very ‘posey’ ‘smile for the camera’ people so would love something very understated and natural. Xx
